The People Who Move Us

I am not a big fan of Mitch Albom's writing, but I don't detest him enough to start a blog dedicated to taking shots at him. There are a number of good writers on the web who do a yeoman's work dissecting and exposing the lies, misinformation, and faulty logic that is written and uttered by public figures, but Morrie Schwarzenegger isn't one of them. Mitch Albom is a Terrible Writer spends some time critiquing Mitch's writing, but most of the time, it's just making fun of him and the people who read his books.

That being said, this piece is absolutely hilarious. Full disclosure: I have an extremely soft spot for humor that centers around the People Mover. As funny as this story is, the comments are even more hilarious because no one seemed to realize that the story is a joke.

I read the Wikipedia entry about the People Mover, but I decided to link to the official People Mover website instead. While Mitch has at least a few defenders, I have yet to meet anyone who is willing or able to defend the People Mover.

I think Mitch is at his best when he writes human interest sports stories. He should stop writing about politics and social issues altogether (at least, in the newspaper). His sports reporting generally fails to impress, usually because he tries to turn a story that should be about a sporting event into a human interest story. When he's writing a genuine human interest story with a sporting background, the result is usually ok.

I've heard he's a huuuge hypocrite, someone who derides athletes for the same things he does: He has no time for fans and has ignored now-journalists that used to worship his columns growing up. Sad to grow up and find out someone is a fraud.

"So now I feel a bit strange, but since the brouhaha that erupted over his phony Final Four story, I've been one of Albom's few defenders. His offense there was serious, but nowhere near as serious as the offense of the many editors who approved the column, and none of their names have been sullied."

Also, I agree 10000% with this.

I'm willing to overlook Mitch's egomania and hypocrisy. I'm sure a lot of people in his position would get drunk on their own power. Of course, I'd be more willing to overlook the flaws in his writing if he didn't show so much contempt for his readers and colleagues.
